Freelance academic editing
Edit academic writing for Chinese students at universities abroad and researchers preparing journal manuscripts. The work is online, part-time and freelance, matched to your subject expertise.
Who we’re looking for
Professional editors with native-level English and experience in academic or scientific editing.
A relevant PhD or experience editing for academic publishers is preferred. Expertise in medical and life-science editing is especially welcome.
Applications are welcome worldwide.
The manuscripts
- Chinese students at universities abroad: essays, dissertations and theses.
- Chinese researchers: academic and scientific journal manuscripts, including medical and life-science papers.
Editing scope
Each manuscript receives an initial AI grammar pass before it reaches you. Your edit focuses on clear, natural English, consistency and the conventions of the subject.
- Light editing: polish wording, sentence flow and consistency, with a final language check.
- Substantive editing: rewrite awkward passages and improve paragraph structure and flow while preserving the author’s meaning.
We send the manuscript, word count, editing brief, deadline and fee before work begins. Edited files are returned with tracked changes.
Working with Yoren
We’re expanding our academic services. We’ll contact you when a request matches your expertise and availability.
We agree your rate and payment currency before your first assignment and pay for completed work in that currency.

- your time zone and availability
- your rates for light and substantive editing, per 1,000 words in your preferred currency
We review your experience and proposed rate. If we agree to work together, we’ll ask for a photo and short bio for your profile on Yoren, so clients can learn about your expertise and choose whom to work with.
